Pittsburgh Planning Commission votes through two new Strip District apartment projects

A total of 263 more places to live are approved to be built for a short stretch along Smallman Street in the Strip District. Today, the Pittsburgh Planning Commission unanimously approved two new multifamily projects for the Strip District.

For a site a few blocks away just off Smallman Street, Hullett Properties proposes to redevelop an aging warehouse property at 50 26th Street long operated by J. Harris & Sons into a new 179-unit apartment development.

It’s a project close to Hullett’s first project in Pittsburgh, a fully sold-out 27-unit condo project on Smallman in which the new James Cafe recently opened and it also just across the railroad tracks for 3 Crossings and the headquarters of Argo AI, recently announced to have shut down.

The two projects add to a Smallman corridor that’s likely been one of the most active in the region for new development. Other properties along Smallman have also been acquired and considered for new apartment development as well.

At its regular meeting, the Pittsburgh Planning Commission also voted to approve the University of Pittsburgh’s new Recreation and Wellness Center development on O’Hara Street, the site for which has already been cleared and for which Pitt recently held a groundbreaking celebration.
